The Boley Fair was first held way back in 1986! The original Boley Fair was based on the concept of being 'strictly old' with 'nothing modern' - that was and still is the concept! The Boley Fair is run to coincide with the traditional Sheep Fair once held in Hilltown on the second Tuesday of every month. The Boley Fair, runs for five days concluding on the second Tuesday in July.
For the first two years it was called 'The Booley Fair' but this changed in 1988 to the current spelling. The fair ran yearly until the mid 1990s when it was put to rest. However, in 2004 a group of interested local people got together and revived the Fair and with much effort and determination have brought the traditions, pastimes and skills of bygone days to a new generation of young people from near and far. The 'Boley Fair' takes it name from a way of life once practiced in the Mournes (and other places - see History of the Boley), when entire families moved with their cows into the mountains to take advantage of the free grazing. The 'Boley Hut', which forms the centrepiece of the Fair can be seen in Hilltown Square throughout the Fair is depicted on the right of this website's banner. It is a replica of the summer dwellings used by the people who went 'boleying'.
